TAN COHEN

This is the official site for Tan Cohen, psychotherapist in New York City. I practice relational psychotherapy with adults, couples and adolescents in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and virtually.

I understand that starting therapy is a deeply personal choice. Whether you’re a veteran or new to this process, you deserve to work with someone you can really talk to. That’s the big thing. Maybe you’re noticing patterns showing up again and again in relationships, at work, or in your internal world. Maybe you’re trying to manage the impact of trauma or you’re asking yourself questions related to your identity. Or maybe you’re simply wanting a space where the rhythm slows and the volume is turned down a bit - New York is wonderful, but it can do a number on us. Whatever it is that brings you here is yours, it’s meaningful, and it’s valid. That said, there’s no rule that we have to figure everything out on our own.

My clinical experience has been devoted to working with adults and teens moving through transitions, experiencing substance use challenges, living with chronic and stigmatized medical diagnoses, and making meaning of grief. I use a psychodynamic and relational approach, which means we’ll explore how the past might show up in your life today, while also paying close attention to the here and now. You’re the authority on your own experience and I believe that therapy is a collaboration. Connection is foundational, so we each have a crucial role here. The goal is for us to build a relationship that allows you to fully show up in the room, including the parts that may feel unspoken. It’s a process and there’s no rush.

About

Life has taught me the importance of curiosity, flexibility, and seeing people as whole, complicated, and imperfect. I don’t believe in ”good” or “evil.” I tend to find beauty in ugliness and feel compassion for cowardice. This work is about building a strong foundation - a deepened self acceptance for you to take out into the world, into your unique life. Whether you’re seeking help, healing, clarity, or just a moment in your week when you can be deeply listened to, I’ll meet you there.
